Types Of Crossings

In Canada, motorists approaching a public crossing will commonly see one of the following warning devices:

crossbuck.gif (1165 bytes) Crossbuck- A passive warning sign generally in use at lower volume / speed crossings with sightlines that provide motorists with the opportunity to safely stop when a train is seen approaching.
crossimg1.gif (1227 bytes) Flashing Lights- An active warning device that is generally used at higher volume / speed crossings or where sightlines do not provide motorists with adequate warning of the approach of a train.
cross2.jpg (2631 bytes) Flashing Lights & Gates- An active warning device that is generally used where there are two or more tracks at or near the crossing, where train speeds or road traffic volumes are high, or where geometry of the crossing could confuse a motorist (such as a near by intersection).
